A magical learning game for children
Heksebeths Hekseria is a playful learning game for children, where they strengthen their reading motivation and language understanding through magic and wordplay. The game makes early encounters with reading feel safe, intuitive, and full of curious discovery.
Task
DR Ramasjang and Minisjang wanted a digital learning game for children aged 5-7 that could strengthen reading motivation and make early encounters with words feel safe and engaging. The game was to be part of the Alle Ord Tæller initiative and support children in early reading development - including those who are not yet confident readers.
At the same time, the experience needed to feel playful and intuitive rather than school-like, and build on a universe already familiar to children from Ramasjang.
Dwarf developed and pitched the concept Heksebeth’s Hekseria at DR’s Invitation to Pitch Day, with the ambition of turning reading into an experience filled with imagination, confidence and linguistic curiosity.
Solution
The result was an HTML5 game integrated into the DR Ramasjang LÆR app, where children help the well-known character Heksebeth transform words from her spellbook into the correct ingredients for orders at Heksebeth’s Hekseria.
When spells go wrong, “word mix-ups” and playful “magic mistakes” occur, inviting children to experiment with letters and meaning, and discover how small changes in a word can transform its meaning entirely.
The gameplay is designed around the needs of the target group, emphasizing repetition and a sense of safety. Players receive a task, complete it, and are rewarded before continuing. This familiar rhythm builds confidence and encourages exploration of language.
At the same time, visual hints and clear connections between words and images make the game accessible for children who are not yet confident readers.
The game is also designed to encourage shared experiences, prompting conversations between children and adults about words, meaning and mistakes - extending the learning beyond the screen.
Result
Heksebeths Hekseria was launched as part of DR’s digital learning universe and contributes to strengthening children’s reading motivation through play, familiar characters and linguistic discovery.
The game makes early reading experiences safe and engaging, allowing children to experiment with language without fear of making mistakes.
By combining letters and words with magic and humor, Dwarf and DR have created an experience where reading feels natural and enjoyable rather than instructional.
The game supports DR’s ambition to inspire positive reading habits and highlights that language is not just something to learn - but something to explore and understand the world through.
Our talented colleagues at Benny Box have developed and designed the visual style, illustrative language and characters in the game.
