Loyalty that makes sense.
In the summer of 2023, Dwarf became part of an ambitious international collaboration to develop Spenn – the Nordics’ new loyalty currency. The vision was clear: to create an attractive and effective loyalty currency that unites the Nordics’ largest loyalty programs, providing members with an easy and valuable way to earn and spend points.
The Task
Spenn is a joint investment by two of the Nordics’ most powerful brands in travel and hospitality, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Strawberry Hotels, the company behind well-known hotel brands such as Clarion, Comfort, and Quality Hotels – and in Denmark, Villa Copenhagen and Admiral Hotel.
With a total over 9 million members across their individual loyalty programs, Spenn represents an enormous opportunity to rethink the concept of loyalty programs – but also a complex challenge. The task was to merge two of the Nordics’ largest loyalty programs into one platform that is attractive to both users and future loyalty brand partners.
The Solution
To turn the vision into reality, Dwarf helped develop an advanced yet intuitive platform that brings together everything that makes loyalty programs successful – from personalized communication to deep integrations of partner offers and data.
Dwarf was responsible for designing the MarTech landscape, using Braze and Contentful as the core tools, with all data gathered in Snowflake and processed through a custom-built data hub. Over time, additional digital partners joined the project, making the development of Spenn’s app and platform a collaboration between multiple international agencies. Together with Norwegian and Strawberry, Spenn has been built as a dedicated tech company headquartered in Oslo.
The result is a loyalty engine that solves significant technical challenges while creating value for both brands and consumers. At its heart is a dynamic platform that connects Norwegian and Strawberry’s loyalty programs with the flexibility to onboard new brands in the future. For the first time, members can combine their points in one place and use them across both programs. This required the integration of large, complex systems into an architecture capable of processing real-time data from millions of users while ensuring that transactions and points are always fully synchronized.
Contentful serves as the foundation for managing content and offers, providing Spenn and its partners with full control over updates. Whether it’s content for the app, website, or emails, every campaign and loyalty program can be managed centrally. From the start, the solution has been designed to be as scalable as it is flexible, ensuring there is always room for onboarding new partners and launching campaigns as Spenn grows.
To connect Spenn with the consumers, Dwarf built a communication infrastructure powered by Braze. This allows Spenn to facilitate personalized, targeted communication with the members of the connected loyalty programs – whether through email, push notifications, in-app messages, or SMS. Consumers are always met with relevant, tailored messages based on their behavior, preferences, and earned points. This is more than communication – it’s personalized interaction at scale.
The Result
The solution is not just built for today – it’s designed for the future. The API-driven architecture ensures that new partners, markets, and technologies can be added without starting from scratch. At the same time, the system provides real-time insights into user behavior and campaign performance, allowing Spenn to evolve and improve based on what works in practise.
With Spenn, Dwarf has not only contributed to the creation of another loyalty program – but helped build one of the Nordics’ most exciting new tech companies. This future-proof platform is set to redefine how loyalty programs work in the Nordics – and perhaps the world.
